REAL VENICE

Real Venice è il nome di un progetto dall'associazione Venice in peril che attraverso l'arte contemporanea mira a raccogliere fondi a sostegno della salvaguardia della città: in questo caso con una mostra fotografica con opere di 14 artisti, del calibro di Nan Goldin, Candida Hoefer,  Mimmo Jodice, Hiroshi Watanabe. La mostra si è tenuta nella sua sede italiana dal 4 giugno al 30 settembre sull'isola di San Giorgio Maggiore a Venezia ed è attualmente visitabile, fino all'11 dicembre, alla Somerset House di Londra.

"Venezia è sicuramente in pericolo. Per molti dei suoi edifici il livello dell'acqua raggiunge la congiunzione tra le basi impermeabilizzate e la muratura di mattoni porosi. Questa minaccia sta letteralmente corrodendo la struttura della città: nella basilica di San Marco le infiltrazioni di umidità raggiungono i 6 metri d'altezza sulle pareti e stanno causando la caduta dei preziosi mosaici dell'atrio. Non è mai successo nei secoli precedenti. Questa è la ragione per cui è tragicamente sbagliato supporre che Venezia continuerà a sopravvivere solo perchè è sopravvissuta così a lungo.
L'ente benefico Venice in Peril lavora ormai da 40 anni per restaurare edifici e opere d'arte, per fornire informazioni attendibili riguardo le problematiche che minacciano la città, come il livello dell'acqua, l'eccessivo turismo e lo sfruttamento sregolato della città come risorsa, e non ultimo per esercitare pressione per la protezione di Venezia.
Venice in Peril, in collaborazione con Ivorypress e alcuni generosi finanziatori, ha lanciato una grande iniziativa artistica per raccogliere fondi per Venezia. Quattordici artisti che si esprimono attraverso la fotografia sono stati scelti per visitare la città e per creare in assoluta libertà un portfolio di immagini. Tutti hanno donato un'edizione del loro portfolio affinché venga venduto a sostegno della causa di Venice in Peril: la maggior parte delle opere sono infatti attualmente in vendita.
Il team di Ivorypress, guidato da Elena Foster, ha curato la mostra e prodotto una pubblicazione dallo stesso titolo come parte del progetto C Photo.
Real Venice unisce la creatività, l'energia, l'internazionalismo - e il potere finanziario - dell'arte contemporanea per salvare Venezia, la "fairy city of the heart" come diceva Byron, che noi speriamo sarà ancora al suo posto, in buono stato, ad incantare i nostri pronipoti proprio come ha incantato noi"

"Venice is most definitely in peril. With many of its buildings the water level is at, or above, the line where the water-resistant stone bases join with the porous brickwork. This is rotting the fabric of the city; in St Mark’s Basilica, the damp now reaches six metres up the walls and is causing the precious mosaics in the atrium to fall off.  This has never been the case in previous centuries. This is why it is tragically mistaken to assume that Venice will go on surviving just because it has survived so long. 
The charity Venice in Peril has been working for over 40 years to restore buildings and works of art, to provide reliable information about the threats to the city, whether from the water, from tourism, or over-exploitation, and to lobby for its protection.
Venice in Peril, in collaboration with Ivorypress and generous backers, has launched a major art initiative to raise funds for Venice. Fourteen artists using the medium of photography have been selected to visit the city and with absolute freedom make a portfolio of images. They have all donated an edition of their portfolios to Venice in Peril.
The curators of the exhibition have been the Ivorypress team, led by Elena Foster, and they have also produced a publication with the same title as part of C Photo Project. 
All the pictures can be bought, with all proceeds going to Venice in Peril.
Real Venice harnesses the creativity, the vigour, the internationalism - and the financial power - of contemporary art to saving Venice, the “fairy city of the heart” that we hope will still be there, in good order, to enchant our great-grandchildren as it has enchanted us."
