Direzionando sapientemente il fumo di una candela, Spazuk crea giochi monocromatici delicati e ipnotici: il suo lavoro evolve giocoforza durante la composizione, prendendo direzioni e sviluppi magari imprevisti che l'artista asseconda in modo di lasciare "emergere" la figura.

Prima di Spazuk, alla fine degli anni '40, Arshile Gorky e Sebastiàn Matta hanno tentato la combinazione fumo/pittura, producendo tuttavia opere legate all'espressionismo astratto molto lontane dal contesto figurativo in cui Spazuk si colloca.

L'artista si cimenta anche con opere dal formato ridotto che raffigurano dettagli, che poi assembla insieme al fine di creare un più grande ritratto mosaicato.

L'artista talvolta usa anche il colore, così da rendere un significativo contrasto tra il cupo nero fumo e le squillanti tinte che sceglie di sfondo.

"It was in 2001 that Steven Spazuk discovered a new way to draw and paint. A candle, a sheet of paper and swirls of black smoke transform the artist’s hand into a seismograph that reveals gossamer transparencies, voluptuous spheres with ephemeral halos and surprising x-rays of the soul’s body." Spazuk creates soft and mesmerizing monochromes by playing with the smoke of a candle: his works evolves as the candle is burning, letting the artist develop the image that comes to life during the process. Before this artist, back in the 40's, Arshile Gorky and Sebastiàn Matta worked with soot, combining paint and smoke, but wih different results in the abstract expressionism, far from Spazuk's figurative imagery. The artist works on small pieces too, that he puts together to create a mosaic. Sometimes he uses paint and plays a urgent contrast between the black smoke and the bright colors in the background.
